What got you into the outdoors?
I started working at Hatch packing food for river trips, and ended up swamping a few trips that same season. It was meant to be a one-season adventure in the desert, but I fell in love with the Canyon. The river matters - it's special, which is why I keep coming back.
What is your favorite Grand Canyon fact or story to share with guests?
I love telling stories about Mary Jane Coulter - she was doing things not many women were able to do during her time.
Do you have a favorite place in Grand Canyon?
The Deer Creek and Thunder River area is my favorite place in the Canyon. I suspect it's a special place for a lot of people, and with good reason, it's very much one of a kind.
How do you stay busy in the off season?
I teach courses in creative writing, writing about the environment, and American literature through an ecofeminist lens at the University of North Carolina Asheville.
What would you say to someone who is considering planning a trip, but on the fence?
There is nothing better than being on the river, so get off the fence and go boating.
